Weekly Walks - February and March 2013

To join any of these walks contact Bob on 01745 890453 at least two days in advance of the walk. If there is no response, the walk leader can be contacted on 07785 785 192.
For those starting from the Mulberry Gym, meet at 10.00. Bring stout walking shoes or boots, a waterproof and a drink. Coffee and biscuits are provided on the walk. Cost £10 per person payable on the day.

Wednesday 30th January 2013 Cyffylliog and the upper reaches of the Clwyedog Valley
The walk leads along the river valley and then along quiet lanes and old tracks with wide views to the sea. The walk starts in the village at 10.30, OS map 264 ref 060 578.

Saturday 2nd February 2013 Gopa and Gwrych Woods
After parking in a small car-park above Tan-y-gopa (past the golf course SH 933 771), we enter the small park to go up toward Gopa woods. From here we go across farmland toward Rhyd-y-Foel and up over the old fort and disused quarry to descend into the village. Then we make our way back through Gwrych Woods looking down on the ruined castle and down the coast toward Rhyl. 5.25 miles moderate.

Wednesday 6th February 2013 The Great Orme
We start this walk from the West Shore (Llandudno). We head up Marine Drive and slowly ascend the Orme on its west side getting great views over the estuary and down the coast to Anglesey. We circle the Orme to the half-way point at St Tudnos church where we'll take a break. We make our way back past the ski-slope and through Haulfre gardens. 5.5 miles moderate to hard. SH 769 821.

Wednesday 13th Feb 2013 Cwm and Moel Hiraddug
Starting from the village of Cwm (ref SJ 066 773) the walk takes in a mixture of wooded paths and open countryside. The walk incorporates the hillfort of Moel Hiraddog with superb views over the coast and vale of Clwyd. The walk is mostly moderate with some short but steep uphill sections. Start from the road by the Blue Lion. Distance 5 miles, 2.5 hours.

Saturday 16th February 2013 Llyn Gweryd from Llanarmon-yn-Ial
The centre of the village at Llanarmon SJ 190 561(near the pub) is the start of this walk where we walk out across fields to a lane that leads up to the fishing lake. Passing this we soon attain the ridge of the Clwydians near to Moel y Plas. Continuing along Offa's Dyke path, we drop off the ridge and head toward the other side of the valley, going through an old disused golf course and past a motte and bailey before returning to the pub. 6 miles moderate.

Wednesday 20th February 2013 Llanfair Talhaiarn
Leaving from the car park in the village with its picturesque bridge and riverside the walk follows quiet paths following the river for 2 miles to where the rivers Elwy and Aled meet. The walk then will ascend Mynydd Bodran where there should be spectacular views weather permitting. We will then follow easy paths on our return to the village. Moderately strenuous with some uphill sections, in wet weather some paths will be muddy. The walk starts from the car park beside the bridge, OS explorer map 264 grid ref 926 703, starts at 10.15, is about 4.5 miles, taking around 2 hours.

Wednesday 27th Feb 2013 Pen-y-Cloddiau
A ridge walk and hill fort with panoramic views over the Vale of Clwyd and the coast. The walk starts from the Llangwyfan car park, OS Explorer Map 265 grid ref 138 668. The walk includes an uphill section which is not steep but will take approx 30 minutes to complete. The walk starts at 10.30, is 4.5 miles and will take 2.5 hours.

Saturday 2nd March 2013 Llansannan (North & East)
The car park across the road from the pub SH 933 658 and behind the bus stop is our starting point, where we go north out of the village in the direction of Llanfair TH. Halfway to that village, we reach the high point of the walk and will be able to see wonderful rural views all around. We then return through fields and woods to pick up the Pilgrims' Way which follows the river (Afon Aled) from Bryn Rhyd-yr-arian back to Llansannan. 6 miles moderate to hard.

Wednesday 6th March 2013 Moelfre Isaf and Mynydd Bodrochwyn
Starting from the road next to the Trout Fishery on the B5381 (to Betws yn Rhos) the walk ascends a bridle way to Moelfre Isaf and then along old tracks around the hillside with views over the sea. The walk is about 5 miles and will take 2.5 hours.

Wednesday 13th March 2013 Moel Fodiar
Starting from the Henllan to Llansannan road, map ref 152 716 Explorer Map 265, the walk ascends to the top of Moel Fodiar with panoramic views and then takes bridle ways to a wooded valley returning along ancient tracks. The walk is approx 5.5 miles with some moderate climbs.

Saturday 16th March The Jubilee Walk from Sychnant Pass
We start from the top of the Sychnant Pass, SH 749 770, and walk downhill to Capelulo. From here we go up Fairy Glen and on toward Foel Lus until we reach the 'Jubilee Walk'. This takes us round the mountain obtaining fabulous views up to The Great Orme and Puffin Island and down the coast to Anglesey. Walking up to the North Wales Path, we return over moorland to the start. 5.5 miles moderate to hard.

Wednesday 20th March 2013 Llanfair Talhaiarn
A walk from this picturesque village, leading along the peaceful Nant Barrog valley, then contouring around Moel Unben with superb views of the Snowdonia Peaks, returning along a peaceful lane. The walk starts at 10.15, is 5 miles long and will take around 2.5 hours. The walk starts from the public car park beside the bridge OS Explorer Map 264 grid ref 927 702.

Wednesday 27th March 2013 Dyserth and Craig Fawr
The walk starts from Dyserth and takes the Dyserth railway path before ascending Craig Fawr with superb views over the coast. We will then return using the Offa's Dyke path and old bridle ways. Start at the car park on the A5151, OS explorer map 265 grid ref 062 793. This walk starts at 10.30, is about 6 miles and will take about 2.5 hours.
